Taipei, Aug.5 (CNA) Former National Security Bureau (NSB) Director-General Shi Hwei-yow has been named the bureau's new representative to the European Union, the country's top intelligence agency announced Wednesday in a statement.

For years, the bureau has posted staff in selected countries or regions around the world to facilitate enforcement of its missions and government policy, the statement said.

Shi, a judge-turned-politician, who once studied in Germany and is well versed in European affairs, will take over a post that has been vacant since last November, the NSB statement said.

During his tenures as NSB deputy director and director, Shi visited various EU countries on multiple occasions and submitted many policy proposals for government reference, the statement said.

"With his educational and professional background, Shi is a great fit for the post, " the statement said, adding that Shi will be able to effectively carry out various cooperative projects with the EU after assuming his post.

A legal expert, Shi started his political career by heading the legal service department at the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF), a quasi-official organization authorized to handle exchanges and negotiations with China in the absence of official ties.

He later served as SEF deputy secretary-general as well as its secretary-general and vice chairman. During those tenures, he represented Taiwan in many rounds of talks with China in the 1990s.

Shi, 57, has also been vice chairman of the Cabinet-level Mainland Affairs Council and the head of the Coast Guard Administration.
