US claims about Saberi's case 'ridiculous': Jamshidi

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 14, IRNA – Judiciary spokesman Ali-Reza Jamshidi said on Tuesday that the US allegations regarding the case of Roxana Saberi is “ridiculous and against international laws”.

Addressing reporters, he said Saberi, a dual Iranian-US national, has been charged with spying for the United States and has been detained since January 2009.

Jamshidi stressed that it is ridiculous that a government expresses its views on a case without studying it.

This is also against international laws that officials of a country judge a case without examining it, he added.

Jamshidi said that Saberi’s first court session was held on Monday (yesterday) and her verdict will be issued in the next three weeks.

Meanwhile, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hassan Qashqavi had previously told reporters that Saberi’s journalistic activities were banned in the Islamic Republic since 1385 (this year is 1388).

Her reporter card was sent to the Culture and Islamic Guidance Ministry in 1385 and she should not have been engaged in any journalistic activities in the country, Qashqavi added.

On the case of Silva Harotonian, Jamshidi said, she was sentenced to three years in jail in January for crimes against security. Her jail term has been upheld by the appeal court.
