7/1/2008 - LACKLAND AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFPN) -- National Security Agency officials recently selected the 13th Intelligence Squadron here as the Air Force winner of the 2007 Director's Trophy, awarded annually for outstanding direct tactical signals intelligence contributions to warfighters.

The Director's Trophy is awarded by the director of the National Security Agency to the unit in each military service making the most outstanding contribution to the mission during the previous year.

Members of the Beale Air Force Base, Calif., unit conducted 854 intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions in 2007. These ISR missions were conducted by 13th IS members using the U-2, the RQ-4 Global Hawk and the MQ-1 Predator resulting in 219,000 combat ISR hours. Officials of the 13th IS played a major warfighting role by providing critical, time-sensitive information to 45 ground combat units resulting in the successful execution of 61 decisive combat operations.

"The 13th IS greatly deserves this recognition and the Airmen assigned to the wing and this squadron should all be proud of their warfighting contributions," said Maj. Gen. John C. Koziol, the commander of the Air Force ISR Agency. "They have transformed this weapon system into a regionally focused, globally linked ISR enterprise directly impacting the warfighting missions of all combatant commanders."

According to the citation accompanying the Director's Trophy, "the 13th Intelligence Squadron distinguished itself by providing timely, fused and actionable intelligence to warfighters engaged in the war on terrorism."
