Director of National Intelligence Fellows Award Winners Announce

Intelligence for Science and Technology, Dr. Eric C. Haseltine, presented the second annual DNI Fellows Awards to 10 renowned members of the Intelligence Community today at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence headquarters. The DNI Fellows Awards program recognizes and rewards outstanding technical achievement within the Intelligence Community.

"Today we're honoring 10 individuals who have distinguished themselves in a field that's critical to our intelligence mission - science and technology," said John D. Negroponte. "I'm confident that their research efforts will be fruitful and that the collaboration and community fostered by this program will energize and optimize our S and T efforts and position us well for the future.

A $200,000 research grant is awarded to each Fellow to perform government intelligence technology research. Grants may be applied to fund current or future research initiatives and may be used to support research assistants within their organization, contract to external research groups, or to inaugurate new research programs.

"We expected that the inaugural Fellows, as superstars, would amaze us with their work over the past year, and we weren't disappointed," said Dr. Eric C. Haseltine. "For example, the Fellows made significant progress with technology to locate terrorists and to extract intelligence from remote areas. But some of the Fellows' biggest contributions came from work we did not expect: spontaneous collaborations that attacked some of our Nation's toughest intelligence challenges.

DNI Fellows are nominated by the science and technology organizations of the Intelligence Community and selected annually by the Office of the Associate Director of National Intelligence for Science and Technology. They are chosen based upon their outstanding technical contributions, the expectation of significant technical advances based upon their track record of achievement, and the potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent technical work and collaboration across the Intelligence Community.
