A general court martial here dismissed a colonel from service over the leakage of highly sensitive military information to Pakistani intelligence agents by his clerk.
According to the Pakistani newspaper, Daily Times, The clerk, Lance Naik Javed Khan, was also sentenced to 14 years in imprisonment.
Col Deepak Raina's trial, conducted by a military court in Talepur near Guwahati, concluded on October 27, but higher authorities are yet to confirm the verdict.
Military circles here described the case as the first since the 1971 Indo-Pak war in which an officer was tried for loss of information by a court martial, and was held responsible for letting his subordinate leak vital information.
The colonel, posted in Dharamshala to raise 9 Corps, had made copies of certain reports and documents that were subsequently photocopied by his clerk and passed on to Pakistani operatives.
He allegedly got copies of operational procedures and other reports made to help him get the new formation off the ground.
The copies were saved on a compact disc.
The colonel was accused of getting unauthorized copies of the documents on the CD made by his clerk.
He was also charged with installing a fax machine in the clerk's room instead of an officer's room, and failing to forward an intelligence report on the leak within the stipulated period.
Documents that the clerk managed to pass on to Pakistani agents included details of missile deployments, sector-wise deployment of 4 Corps along the China border, doctrinal documents on nuclear warfare and minutes of meetings attended by the army chief general and his predecessor.
