Imagery on demand
17 July 2006
BACKGROUND
Manned and unmanned platforms need to be capable of working together to execute missions and operate as part of a networked distributed force to conduct successful combat operations in adverse environments.
A key component of today's battlespace is the network, but this is only as good the infrastructure available to distribute the information. The Imagery on Demand (IoD) family provides a range of optimised image dissemination products getting data to where it is needed within the battlespace whilst making the best use of the finite communication infrastructure available.
IMAGERY ON DEMAND
The core of the IoD product family is set of digital image compression and dissemination tools that allow large amounts of EO, IR and SAR data to be compressed, packaged and disseminated over numerous digital communication bearers. Unlike other compression and dissemination techniques, the IoD product family has been designed to operate within the military environment and complies with all relevant NATO interoperability standards.
* Single solution for battlespace image dissemination with fully adjustable digital data rate transmission, configured to suit local operational needs and applicable for use on land sea and airborne platforms.
* Optimised for realtime reconnaissance and targeting applications, linking EO/IR and SAR sensors to weapon effectors, with additional operational benefits:
- Data relay is supported, where the sensor platform is beyond line of sight a third party vehicle can be used to relay the data.
- Remote sensor platform storage is used when the sensor platform is either beyond line of sight or off-tether, so that it can be stored for later transmission.
* State-of-the-art compression technology with built-in image error detection and correction allowing images to be used to support targeting activity.
- Numerically loss less (no loss of data or quality) image compression is support allowing all the original sensor data to be disseminated, but with a greatly reduced bandwidth requirement.
- "Tool Kit" Approach with real time, non real time and narrow band interactive compression techniques supported by programmable data rates, depending on the level of image quality required, asset availability and operational constraints
* Distribution Tolerant Networking (DTN) is inherent in the system design, helping to maintain reliable communication during periods of unreliable connectivity.
