Germany's BND foreign secret service agents did not get their hands on Saddam Hussein's defense plans for Baghdad and they did not pass it to the US one month before the outbreak of the 2003 Iraq war, a top German official said in Berlin on Monday, rejecting a story in the daily New York Times.
"The claim by the New York Times is wrong. The BND and the federal (German) government was unaware of such a plan," government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said during a news conference in Berlin.
The New York Times quoted a classified American military study for its report.
The American newspaper said that two German intelligence officers in Baghdad managed to get defense plans for the Iraqi capital which let the US know where and how Saddam Hussein planned to station his troops.
It also alleged that the BND agents had provided information to the US about a top-level military meeting between Saddam Hussein and his army commanders.
The German media reported earlier that the BND had actively assisted US troops during the Iraq war in 2003 despite Berlin's repeated remarks it had no role in the conflict.
