US intelligence eavesdropped on German secret agents in Iraq: daily

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Feb 21, IRNA
Germany-US-Iraq
US intelligence eavesdropped on two agents of Germany's BND foreign secret service who remained in Baghdad during the Iraq war, the daily Leipziger Volkszeitung reported in its Tuesday edition.

The paper cited a confidential German government report as saying that American intelligence services wiretapped the BND agents by using satellite phones.

The German agents were 'repeatedly pressed' to provide war intelligence from Baghdad to the US command headquarters in Doha, Qatar, according to the news report.

Some 25 out of a total of 125 BND intelligence reports were officially handed to the American side.

A German parliamentary probe is underway to investigate the exact role of the two BND agents during the US war in Iraq.

Berlin had strongly opposed the illegal American invasion of Iraq.
