The leader of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, called Friday for the setting up of an EP committee of inquiry into alleged CIA-operated prisons and secret flights over EU territory.
"Secretary Rice has admitted that such flights existed," Schulz told a press conference in Brussels.
US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice was in Brussels for a NATO foreign ministers meeting Thursday.
"We will be inquiring into it since we cannot allow things to go as we suspect they have been," said Schulz.
He said if an EU member state, "and as it appears a whole series of states were involved, then it is a matter for the EU."
"Active or passive involvement in illegal imprisonment or active or passive involvement in torture is incompatible with the EU human rights charter," said the leader of the second-largest group in the 732-member EP.
The EP is to hold its plenary session in Strasbourg next week.
