Rice to Address Reports of Secret CIA Prisons During Europe Trip
04 December 2005
The White House says Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will address reports of secret U.S. prisons during her trip to Europe this week.
In an interview on American television FOX News Sunday, National Security Advisor Stephen Hadley denied that terrorist suspects are sent abroad to be tortured. He said detainee treatment complies with U.S. law and treaty obligations.
Mr. Hadley said Ms. Rice will address the prison allegations and others in what he called a "comprehensive way" when she visits several European nations (Germany, Romania, Ukraine, Belgium) starting Monday. He said the secretary will argue that terrorism threatens everyone and nations need to "cooperate in its solution."
The national security advisor refused to confirm or deny news reports that the Central Intelligence Agency operates several secret prisons in European countries, or that terror suspects have been secretly transported through European airspace.
