The European Union has asked the US administration for an answer on reports that the US secret service CIA is running secret jails in eastern Europe.
"It is our moral and political duty to seek the truth about the allegations," EU Commissioner for security and justice, Franco Frattini, told reporters in Brussels Wednesday.
Frattini said he is in close contact with the EU Council, EU national governments and UK, the current EU Presidency which are seeking the investigation.
"The US State Department has promised to give a response," added the Commissioner.
He said some interior ministers of EU states have denied the allegations that their countries were hosting such secret detention centres.
US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to discuss the issue with EU leaders during her visit to Brussels next week.
EU member Poland and candidate country Romania are suspected to host the secret prisons. Both have denied it.
