The German government is seeking answers on CIA planes which made numerous stopovers at US airbases in Germany over the past three years, news reports said Saturday.

Asked about the latest media reports on clandestine CIA flights, new German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the Sunday daily Bild am Sonntag, "The foreign minister has to analyze facts not newspaper reports. However what we read, gives cause for concern.

"Therefore it is good that British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw is officially requesting clarification in the name of the European Union," added Steinmeier who is scheduled to meet with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in Washington on Tuesday.

Meanwhile the German ARD public television network reported German security authorities were aware that CIA planes, believed to be carrying terror suspects, touched on US airbases in Germany.
