EU-CIA-secret prisons
The European Union said Thursday that it will look into media reports that the US secret service CIA has set up secret prisons in several eastern European countries.
"We have to find out what is exactly happening. We have all heard about this. We will look into these reports," European Commission spokesman for justice and security affairs Friso Roscam Abbing told reporters in Brussels.
He noted that if the reports were true setting up of such secret detention centres by the CIA could violate EU human rights laws.
The American daily Washington Post reported that the CIA has been holding and interrogating al-Qaeda suspects at a Soviet-era compound in several eastern European countries, including EU member Poland and EU candidate country Romania.
