New York Times Reporter Released From Jail to Testify in CIA Leak Case

30 September 2005

New York Times reporter Judith Miller, who had been jailed for contempt of court, is scheduled to testify to a federal grand jury Friday, in an investigation into the leaking of a covert CIA operative's name.

The Times says Ms. Miller was released Thursday from a federal detention center outside Washington after reaching an agreement with a federal prosecutor.

She had been jailed since July for refusing to testify about information she received from a confidential source on how the identity of CIA operative Valerie Plame was revealed.

The newspaper identifies the source as Vice President Cheney's Chief of Staff, Lewis Libby. Ms. Miller says she decided to testify after Mr. Libby assured the reporter she was no longer bound by a pledge of confidentiality she made to him.
