UK removes military attache from Pakistan amid 'spy scandal'

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

London, Aug 17, IRNA
UK Military Attache-Pakistan
Britain was reported Wednesday to have removed its military attache from his post in Islamabad following reports of his "inappropriate relationship" with a suspected Pakistani spy.

According to the BBC, the British High Commission in Pakistan was said to have lost confidence in Brigadier Andrew Durcan. The Defence Ministry said he was withdrawn after "an internal investigation." The removal comes after the Sun, Britain's top selling tabloid newspaper linked 56-year old Durcan with a suspected female Pakistani spy. It said he had been "tricked into a close friendship by the attractive woman."
The unnamed woman was described as a "defence academic" who was "also believed to be an undercover agent for rogue elements within Pakistan's intelligence services".

The Ministry of Defence was said to have refused to confirm the claims in the Sun, but insisted there was no evidence classified information or British agents had been compromised.
