Negroponte Vows To Reform U.S. Intelligence

Prague, 12 April 2005 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. President George W. Bush's nominee to oversee the United States' spy agencies pledged today to focus on reforming the intelligence community.

The nominee, John Negroponte, testified before the Senate panel that is considering his nomination to become the first national intelligence director. The position was created to coordinate the work of the 15 agencies.

Negroponte said, "As director of national intelligence, I will spare no effort to ensure that our intelligence community is forward-leaning but objective, prudent but not risk-averse, and yet always faithful to our values and our history as a nation. We must make sure that the information generated in one part of the community is accessible to other parts of the community."

Negroponte said his goal will be to improve the quality of analytical products and lay the truth before the policy makers. (DPA/RTR)
