BAE SYSTEMS Preferred Contractor For Major ISTAR Programme

04 Feb 2005

BAE Systems C4ISR Networked Systems & Solutions (NS&S) has been down-selected as the preferred contractor for the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) Project SHAMAN. This 140m ISTAR programme will provide the Royal Navy with its next generation Communications Electronic Support Measures (CESM) capability. The programme encompasses the supply of the CESM systems, the installation on multiple platforms, training and through life support over a 20+ year period. The programme now moves into a 12 - 14 month Advanced Demonstration Phase ahead of the main production programme.

BAE Systems is committed to the success of SHAMAN. This type of ISTAR capability is critical in a world where asymmetric warfare is the real challenge. Our collaborative UK/US team has established a strong relationship with the UK MoD SHAMAN Project Team and we look forward to developing that relationship through to the next phase of the SHAMAN programme. Paul Laity, Campaign Director.

C4ISR Networked Systems & Solutions (NS&S) enables customers to achieve their vision of the battlespace through the delivery of integrated information systems and complex, network enabled solutions.

C4ISR NS&S is leading a strong UK/US industry team consisting of best in field organisations. These include BAE Systems Information & Electronic Warfare Systems (IEWS), Fleet Support Limited, Flagship, QinetiQ and RJD Technology.

IEWS has a 40+ year pedigree in supplying both the Royal Navy and US Navy with their surface ship CESM capability.

By blending the Prime System Integration capability within NS&S with the cutting edge CESM capability within IEWS we have created a transatlantic partnership for success. As we build upon the relationship we have developed over the last few years we continue to investigate opportunities for collaboration in the UK and US. Mo Stevens, Director C4ISR Networked Systems & Solutions

The technical solution for SHAMAN is the SEXTANT System, based upon the IEWS Diamond Software Product FamilyTM. DiamondTM is a key enabler within the SEXTANT system, supplying a hardware and operating system independent open architecture that will operate in a 100% Commercial of the Shelf (COTS) environment. The open architecture allows for low cost and low risk integration of 3rd party capability as well as reducing the risk from obsolescence.

IEWS, with QinetiQ as a technology partner, are supplying proven CESM capability into SEXTANT. Much of QinetiQs capability has been developed through MoD research investment, which enables the MoD to benefit from world leading technology. QinetiQs role within the BAE Systems team will grow UK capability and expertise in this important area.

Our Diamond Software Product FamilyTM is the heart of our current and future CESM systems for both US and UK customers, across all domains. As part of the Diamond family, SEXTANT will benefit through life from investments made in other Diamond based systems Larrie Cable, Vice President and General Manager Information Dominance Systems, BAE Systems IEWS.

Fleet Support Limited, a VTplc/BAE Systems naval support Joint Venture (JV) and Naval Base operating company has the experience and pedigree to smart fit the SEXTANT system to existing platforms and provide waterfront support throughout the life of the programme. Flagship, another VTplc/BAE Systems JV, with a deep understanding of naval training will provide the training solution. RJD Technology Ltd, a consultancy specialising in CESM Subject Matter Expertise, will support the SHAMAN system and the training solution.
