DAM NECK, Va. (NNS) -- Intelligence Strike Team Training (ISTT) is changing the way battle group intelligence teams prepare for deployment.
Due to the nature of their work, intelligence professionals are not always given the opportunity to train together prior to deployment. To respond to this need and standardize intelligence team training to meet fleet requirements, the Center for Naval Intelligence (CNI) created ISTT.
"We've taken a layered approach," said Center for Navy and Marine Corps Intelligence Training (CNMCIT) Commander, Capt. John O'Brien, "We want to establish a set of rigorous skill sets that build upon one another, so the end result is an effective and efficient intelligence operation that can easily communicate with other intelligence operations."
Intelligence professionals visit the trainer three times during the Inter-Deployment Cycle (IDC). Using computer based simulations based on real world events, the Center gives Sailors the opportunity to learn how to work together as a team in an operational setting.
"The goal is to expose these teams to the situations they will encounter while underway so they know what to do and how to react," said Lt. j.g. James King, ISTT instructor. "To provide the skills these professionals need before they need it."
ISTT conducted 18 training evolutions during its first year, including five Carrier Strike Groups and over 400 intelligence officers and Intelligence Specialists as part of their IDCs.
"This is a prime example of aligning training to meet Fleet requirements, " said Commander, Naval Personnel Development Command Rear Adm. Kevin Moran. "It's all about increasing combat readiness."
