LOCKHEED MARTIN AWARDED SENSOR STUDY CONTRACTS FOR AIR FORCE UAV PROGRAM
SYRACUSE, NY, December 10th, 2002 -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Lockheed Martin two study contracts worth $1.5 million to support the service's next-generation Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology project, designated SensorCraft. "UAVs offer many benefits, but also present the challenge of significant weight and physical space constraints for the payloads they carry," said Dr. Dennis Beres, v.p., radar systems for Lockheed Martin. "Our principal objective under these contracts is to evaluate UAV sensor requirements and identify techniques to provide the greatest possible capability and flexibility to the Air Force."
Under one contract, entitled Multi-Function Surveillance System (MFSS), Lockheed Martin will refine the SensorCraft system requirements, identify and define radar modes for enhanced mission performance, and develop system strategies for controlling these modes. To assist in this development, Lockheed Martin will leverage its LinkSensors program, which includes a netted and distributed sensor management function.
"The SensorCraft vision will help focus the development of our radar technology elements for potential incorporation into future Intelligence, Surveillance and Recognizance (ISR) platforms, such as the Multi- Command and Control Aircraft (MC2A) and other Air Force UAV programs," said Jeff Carlo, the MFSS program manager at the U.S. Air Force's Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y. "We have multiple mission requirements and limited resources aboard the ISR platforms so one of the key elements of SensorCraft is an intelligent resource controller."
For the second contract, Lockheed Martin will provide an electromagnetic interference mitigation study to analyze the radar systems that will be used on SensorCraft and ensure their electronic components are complementary.
Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems (NE&SS)-Radar Systems in Syracuse, N.Y., along with Lockheed Martin Management and Data Systems, Phoenix, Ariz., will work with the U.S. Air Force's Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y., on the studies for SensorCraft.
A leader in the design, development and integration of radar systems, vessel traffic and port safety, simulation and training systems and other complex electronic systems, Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics & Surveillance Systems (NE&SS) - Radar Systems serves a wide range of customers. These include all branches of the U.S. armed services, including the Coast Guard, as well as other agencies within the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Transportation and State, and defense and transportation departments of countries on six continents. NE&SS-Radar Systems employs over 3,000 people with facilities in the U.S. and three other countries, and is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation. Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin is a global enterprise principally engaged in the research, design, development, manufacture and integration of advanced-technology systems, products and services. The corporation's core businesses are systems integration, space, aeronautics, and technology services.
