
Northrop Grumman Delivers 10th Joint STARS Production Aircraft
MELBOURNE, Fla., April 30, 2001 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation's (NYSE:NOC) Integrated Systems Sector (ISS) today delivered the 10th E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) production aircraft to the U.S. Air Force's 93rd Air Control Wing, based at Robins AFB, Ga., two months ahead of schedule. This is the sixth consecutive E-8C that ISS has delivered early.
"Joint STARS continues to be a success story," said Alan Doshier, ISS vice president-Airborne Ground Surveillance and Battle Management (AGS&BM) Systems. "The continued early delivery of this complex system is a tribute to the hard work and dedication of our teams at Melbourne and Lake Charles and the company's Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector."
In addition, ISS was awarded two contracts in March for Joint STARS aircraft. The first was a $169 million contract for full productionfunding of one aircraft, the 15th in the line. The second was a $38 million contract for long lead procurement of a 16th Joint STARS E-8C. Electronic Systems Center, Hanscom AFB, Mass., awarded the contracts.
Northrop Grumman's ISS is the prime contractor for the E-8C Joint STARS, the world's most advanced airborne surveillance and target acquisition system that provides real-time, accurate information about vehicles on the ground and slow-moving aircraft for peacekeeping missions and decision-making on the battlefield.
ISS refurbishes Boeing 707 series aircraft at its Lake Charles, La., facility. The company's Electronic Sensors and Systems Sector's NordenSystems business unit in Norwalk, Conn., manufactures the Joint STARS radar sensor, a key component. The 24-foot Joint STARS radar and the powerful computer systems are installed at the sector's AGS&BM Systems facility in Melbourne. The Melbourne team completes work on the production aircraft with ground and flight-testing of the system.
