Nov 1, 2000
Ben Gurion International Airport - Israel Aircraft Industries' MALAT Division, along with IAI's Engineering Division held a workshop in Israel on 7-8 November 2000 to advance civil/ commercial applications for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV).
The workshop was held under the auspices the Fifth Framework Programme of the European Commission, and the Israeli Directorate for E.U SP5 (ISERD) in collaboration with several European Aerospace companies such as: Alenia Aerospace, BAE Systems, EADS, Thomson-CSF, Snecma, Sonaca, Swedish Space Corporation, and research centers in the aerospace domain, such as: CIRA (Italy), NLR (The Netherlands), ONERA (France), and DLR (Germany).
The workshop was intended for governmental representatives, management representatives of the aeronautical industry and academy, and potential customers for civilian UAVs. It included presentations and commentary from over 25 industry experts addressing a wide range of topics relevant to the future use of UAVs in the civilian field. Israel Aircraft Industries believes that it and other participants in the UAV business can contribute from their vast know-how and proven experience to further this field.
Civil / commercial UAV systems will provide new and improved tools for earth observation and surveillance, environmental monitoring, law enforcement, communication relays, etc.
Dr. David Harari, Deputy Corp. Vice President for R&D, IAI, said: "The combination of developing mature technologies for military activities along with years of experience, now provides the confidence for transferring these achievements to many potential applications within the civilian market. During our UAV Workshop, the technical, airworthiness, operational and regulatory issues related to UAV integration in Aerospace, were discussed in scope of the quality of life improvement for our citizens".
Israel Aircraft Industries (IAI) has been developing and operating UAV systems for nearly 25 years. IAI's technological edge will assist in meeting the safety requirements needed to fly UAVs over highly- populated areas.
Average yearly sales of UAVs by IAI/MALAT Division (including UAV technologies and sub- systems) is estimated 150$ Million per year.
