VOICED AT:
INTRO: Colombia President Andres Pastrana has once
again called on the international community to
confront the global problem of illegal drugs. Mr.
Pastrana made the comments on the opening day of the
United Nations Millennium Summit in New York.
Correspondnet Barbara Schoetzau reports.
TEXT: Mr. Pastrana says unlawful drugs and related
crimes such as narco-trafficking, money laundering,
and contraband and arms dealing are problems shared by
all nations. Consequently, he says, all nations must
participate in a global effort to resolve the problem.
Speaking through an interpreter, Mr. Pastrana
described the impact of a civil war, fueled by drug
money, on Colombia.
////PASTRANA ACT ////
I come from Colombia, a beautiful country inhabited by
40 million people who love life and in which,
unfortunately, an absurd confrontation persists,
fueled by a few violent persons and by the tainted
money of traffic in drugs which affect and involve the
entire world. But we are committed to the quest for a
negotiated peace.
//// END ACT ////
Mr. Pastrana says Colombia needs international
cooperation to help achieve peace and social justice
for all Colombians. If the poorest of the poor are
left behind in the globalizing economy, he warns,
political unrest will be the result. (Signed)
