LOCKHEED MARTIN MANAGEMENT & DATA SYSTEMS Announces Successful Demonstration of the Modular Synthetic Aperture Radar System (MODSAR)
Goodyear, AZ, July 18th, 2000 -- Lockheed Martin Management & Data Systems (M&DS) recently demonstrated its new Modular Synthetic Aperture Radar (MODSAR) System on an F-16 fighter jet aircraft in Fort Worth, Texas. The MODSAR is intended to meet domestic and international surveillance and reconnaissance requirements for the new millennium. The demonstration began in June with the integration of the MODSAR into an F-16 centerline pod. A series of successful flight tests were conducted during a two-week period at the Lockheed Martin Tactical Aeronautical Systems in Fort Worth.
The MODSAR offers a full range of airborne surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities and information exploitation systems tailored to meet the needs of each individual customer. The MODSAR, as demonstrated, offers Ku-band "near photographic" resolution. It also has the flexibility and the capability to be modified for the increased range and all-weather capabilities of X-band. The system capability enhances a customer's fighter aircraft inventory by providing a 24-hour/day, all weather, force-multiplying capability. The system is designed to include Moving Target Indicator (MTI), GPS accuracy and a real time data link capability. MODSAR represents the culmination of many years of hardware and software development of this state-of-the-art, "near photographic" Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) system.
"The recent demonstration was a complete success. We imaged at altitudes from 3500 feet to 25000 feet at all required ranges. We collected superb imagery in high-resolution spot modes as well as various strip modes. MODSAR provides users with a wide range of capabilities to solve their airborne surveillance and reconnaissance needs," said Jerry Lindfelt, vice president of the reconnaisannce systems line of business at Management & Data Systems.
MODSAR has many surveillance and reconnaissance applications beyond fighter community requirements. Capitalizing on worldwide experience in SAR applications for business jets, Lockheed Martin M&DS has also designed MODSAR applications for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), the C-130, and other transport aircraft adapted for ISR missions.
Management & Data Systems (https://mds.external.lmco.com) has been a leader in systems integration, systems engineering, software development and program management in support of vital national systems for more than 30 years. M&DS is a unit of Lockheed Martin Corporation with approximately 7,500 employees at facilities in Arizona, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, and the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area.
