POLLARD SENDS MESSAGE TO HIS FORMER COMMANDER
ISRAEL LINE
MONDAY, JULY 6, 1998
Jonathan Pollard's wife, Esther, met on Sunday with Rafi Eitan, Pollard's
former Israeli commander, to relay a message from her husband, who is
imprisoned in the United States for spying on behalf of Israel, MA'ARIV
reported. This marked the first time Jonathan Pollard and Eitan had
communicated in 13 years.
During the meeting, Mrs. Pollard handed Eitan a message from her husband
reading, "Rafi, a commander does not abandon his soldiers in the field. The
State has finally recognized me as its agent -- as your soldier. I ask you
to bring me home."
Eitan replied, "I will do all that I can to assist you in arriving home
to Israel as quickly as possible."
Meanwhile, MA'ARIV reported that according to The Washington Post, U.S.
President Bill Clinton is still opposed to pardoning Pollard. The paper
quoted sources in the U.S. government who claim that the information Pollard
had transferred to Israel caused great damage to U.S. intelligence.
