Washington -- President Clinton will nominate career foreign service officer
Mary Ann Casey to be the U.S. ambassador to Tunisia, the White House
announced on May 11.
Following is the text of the White House announcement:

The president today announced his intention to nominate Mary Ann Casey, of
Colorado, as Ambassador to the Republic of Tunisia.
"Mary Anne Casey's extensive foreign service experience will be a great
asset in her role as Ambassador to Tunisia," the president said. I am
delighted to announce her nomination."
Ms. Casey is a career foreign service officer. In 1991, she was appointed
as Ambassador to the Republic of Algeria. Since joining the service in
1973, she has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Regional Analysis in
the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research (1989-91) and as
the State Department's Director for North African Affairs (1987-89). She
has also served as the Deputy Director for the State Department's Office
for Syria, Lebanon, Jordan and Iraq (1984-86). Her other assignments in
the department include the Operations Center of the Executive Secretariat
(1976-77), the Policy Planning Staff (1977-78), and the Iraq Desk
(1978-80). Ms. Casey's overseas experience has focused on North Africa,
where she served at the American Embassies in Tunisia (1981-84) and Morocco
(1974-76).
1orn November 11, 1949, in Boulder, Colorado, Ms. Casey holds a bachelor's
degree in international relations from the University of Colorado. Her
foreign languages are French, Arabic and German.
Ms. Casey will succeed John Thomas McCarthy.
