UK MOD Operation Ellamy

19 May 2011 RAF airstrike on the Al Khums naval base

Released May 20, 2011

In an escalation of NATO's Operation Unified Protector, targets were expanded on May 19, 2011, to include Lybian regime naval assets. Late that night, a coordinated attack took place involving a number of nations and targeting pro-Gadaffi waships and buildings in Tripoli, Al Khums and Sirte.

RAF aircraft, consisting of both Tornados and Typhoons, struck a number of targets located at the Al Khums naval base. The facility was reported to have been selected due to the concentration of regime warships and its proximity to the port of Misurata(Misratah), Libya, and against which repeated attempts had been made by forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi to close to humanitarian shipping. The airstrikes marked the first time that RAF aircraft targeted warships as part of Operation Ellamy.

In the attack on the naval base at Al Khums, two Libyan corvettes were destroyed. Also hit was a facility located in the base's dockyard which had been tasked with constructing fast inflatable boats. These boats had reportedly been used over a number of occasions by Libyan special forces to mine the approaches to Misurata and attack vessels in the area.

Additional airstrikes were conducted that same night against two other ships located in Tripoli. Both the Al Khums' and Tripoli's warship attacks were coordinated so as to take place nearly simultaneously. The Al Khums building was destroyed shortly afterwards.

A total of eight Libyan vessels were destroyed during the operation.
