The image below shows an early warning radar and aircraft-control facility near the Herat airfield, post-strike. The airfield is visible in the upper-left-hand corner of the image. Down in the lower-right-hand corner is a residential area. A mosque is located near the center of the picture.

Near the mosque was a helicopter which was struck by coalition munitions, along with other military targets in the area. The helicopter blades that got destroyed in the strike are somewhat visible.

According to a Senior Defense Official, the helicopter was deliberately positionned next to the mosque, to either cause some collateral damage to the mosque or protect the helicopter from strike. Howeve, the helicopter was destroyed, and the mosque was not damaged.

This image was taken on October 8, 2001.
