Imagery of Al Udeid Air Base break website record

The August 5, 2002, release of the imagery of the Al Udeid air base in Qatar, has broken all previous web traffic records, with over 500,000 pageviews and 10,000 session on August 7th. The stunningly crisp imagery from Digitalglobe caused quite a stir as aircraft, vehicles, and military tents were shown in unprecedented clarity. The base which is home to over 3,800 U.S. soldiers, will likely play a key role in any future conflict with Iraq.

The image of Al Udeid attracted international media attention and appeared on CNN, ABC world News, NBC Nightly News, CBS, the BBC, Fox News, as well as the New York Times, Aviation Week and Space Technology, the New York Post, and many other international media organizations. The image also attracted a number of hate-filled email rants from critics objecting to the publication of the image on the grounds of operational security and force protection.

One news organization expressed interest in doing a broadcast segment on why our website posted imagery of Al Udeid. They wanted imagery for the story, (of course) and asked us why we posted the imagery. We asked them why they were using imagery for a story on our website's posting of the Al Udeid imagery. They thought about it, and decided there was no story.

Another news organization after running a story questioning the wisdom of the Al Udeid image, promptly went out and bought up archived imagery of several other US facilities in the CENTCOM AOR.
