Chao Yang-class [Gearing] Destroyer
By the early 1990s the ROC Navy had more than a dozen older, World War II-era Gearing-class destroyers and numerous smaller combatants and auxiliaries in its operational inventory.
Seven of the Gearing-class ships were converted into area air defence ships under the Wu Chin III program, receiving 10 box-launched Standard SM-1 surface-to-air missles and associated fire control systems. These ships form the ROCN's 131 Squadron.
The general consensus is that only seven ships remain in commission, though IISS in its The Military Balance, 2003-04 still indicates that there are ten in the fleet. The remainder of these ships, of limited combat effectiveness, have been de-comissioned.
