Negev Brigade
The Negev Brigade was formed in 1948 during the Israel's War of Independence as one of three brigades formed from previously independent Palmach battalions. The brigade was primarily responsible for conducting operations in the northern Negev and southern lowland areas. At the outset of the war, the Negev Brigade was under the command of Colonel Nahum Sarig who controlled two battalions totaling around 800 men.
In the first stage of the war, the Negev Brigade attempted to capture an Iraqi police stronghold, but failed to do so. In October 1948, the Negev Brigade participated in Operation Yoav which involved combating Egyptian forces. During the fighting, Israeli troops successfully captured Egyptian positions, including Bir E-Tamile. Near the end of the war, the Negev Brigade took part in Operation Uvda, which wrested control of the area near the Gulf of Aqaba from Jordanian forces.
