23mm Anti-Aircraft Gun

The Iranian 23mm double barrel AA gun appears to be a locally built version of the Russian ZU-23, manufactured by the SANAM Industry Group. The ZU-23 is the Iranian mode towed 23 mm anti-aircraft twin-barrelled automatic cannon. Each of the 23 mm barrels is provided with a flash suppressor and a handle is mounted on top of each barrel to enable it to be changed quickly. It is described as being a suitable weapon against targets at a distance of 2500m and high of 1500m. It is designed for anti-aircraft defense and can also be used against light armored vehicles, 2000m away. Furthermore in clear weather with sufficient light, it can be used against concentration of live forces. CIT and APIT shells are used for firing at airborne and ground targets.

• The (APIT) round forms part of 23mm series fired by ZU-23 air defense gun. The projectile is a solid steel body with steel ballistic cap and tracer assembly in the base. The tracer burns for at least 5 seconds.
• The (HEI) round is another type of 23mm anti-aircraft series fired by ZU-23 air defense gun. The projectile consists of a steel shell filled with explosive material and ignited by a PD MG-25 nose fuze and the round is equipped with self-destruction mechanism with duration of 5-11 seconds.
• The (HEIT) This round is the same as HEI type being fired by ZU-23 air defense gun but with tracer assembly burning for at least 5 seconds.

The 23 mm. single barrel anti-aircraft machine gun, standing type is a suitable weapon against targets at a distance of 2500 m. This type of gun has been designed and manufactured for mounting on light boat and tactical vehicle is used by coast-guard. The 23 mm is a fully integrated, self-propelled anti-aircraft system with single barrel automatic cannons mounted on vehicle. The automatic 23 cannons have a significant threat to aircraft and light armoured ground vehicles. The optical sensor searches the targets which provide aircraft tracking. This gun also can be controlled in semi-automatic mode by joystick action.
