Glavkos Type 209 - 1100 and 1200

The Hellenic Navy operates two versions of the Glavkos Type 209 submarine, the 1100 and the 1200. Although they are relatively simple boats of modest automation, they are capable and have met with good export success. The first four boats have been overhauled and received Harpoon capability.

Hellas was the first country to order this type of submarine from HDW of Germany, and the first batch of these submarines entered service in 1971. In 1989 it was decided to perform a major upgrade to these units and they now have the most advanced electronics in their class, as well as the ability to use anti-ship missiles while submerged.
