All submarines in the class were initially to be named after French admirals who had distinguished themselves at sea. The first ANS from the Barracuda program would be called Suffren , the following would be named Duguay-Trouin, Tourville, Dupetit-Thouars, Duquesne and De Grasse.
On March 25, 2015, on the recommendation of Admiral Bernard Rogel, Chief of the Naval Staff, Mr. Jean-Yves Le Drian, Minister of Defense decided to appoint Rubis and Casabianca the 5th and 6th SNA of Suffren type. This choice thus perpetuate the memory of units that had historically been illustrated in recent history, and whose memory is of particular importance to sailors in general and submariners in particular.
The Casabianca will remain in history for its escape from the port of Toulon under the command of Commander Herminier, during the German attack of 1942, and for its many missions alongside the allies. The Rubis , meanwhile, had the longest record of Free French Naval Forces (FNFL). Cited 3 times, it was the first combatant named Companion of the Liberation and to be decorated with the Croix de Guerre 39-45.
The first Barracuda-type nuclear attack submarine, the Suffren, was delivered November 6, 2020 to the French Navy. The next in the series was to be delivered in 2022. The Minister of the Armed Forces Florence Parly attended the signing of the act of acceptance of the nuclear attack submarine Suffren between the delegate general for armaments Joël Barre and the CEO of Naval Group Pierre Eric Pommmellet. He still has to conduct operational tests to verify his military performance under conditions of employment similar to those in theaters of operations before being officially admitted to active service in 2021.
