Forward Operating Base Blessing
Forward Operating Base Blessing is located in Kunar Province, near the Chiriac Valley and the town of Wanat in Eastern Afghanistan.
Mostly soldiers at FOB Blessing belonging to 173rd Airborne Brigade provide security for the villages of the Chiriac Valley and deliver humanitarian assistance with ANA and ANP forces. However In an area so close to the Pakistani border Taliban activity is a given.
This area was the site of an intense battle on July 13, 2008 when at least 200 Taliban attacked one of Blessing's small satellite observation posts. At the time 2nd Platoon, Company C (Chosin Company), 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade along with some Afghan soldiers were stationed there to watch for Taliban activity coming across the border, when they came under very sudden heavy attack. The attack began at 4:30 AM with the first round of RPG's targeting the OP's mortar pit and a tow truck inside the camp, the battle raged for almost two hours after that with Taliban forces attempting to breach the camps wire and being driven back by superior American marksmanship and the effective use of close air support and artillery support coming from FOB Blessing. All told nine Americans were killed with another 15 wounded, along with an uknown number of Taliban although their casualties were very likely much heavier given how much ordinance was used by coalition air units to drive the Taliban away from the wire.
