Costa Rica

After the election of Jose (Pepe) Figueres as President of Costa Rica in 1953, the CIA worked with opposition forces in the country in attempts to overthrow the government. Of particular concern to the CIA was Figueres' policy of granting asylum in Costa Rica to Communists and non-Communists alike. Figueres, a moderate Socialist, stepped down from power after his candidate lost the Presidential election in 1958.
