Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM)

NASA was developing the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) for the space shuttle to improve the shuttle's lift performance by 5,400 kg (12,000 lbs.) and to reduce the number of failure modes in a shuttle launch. Because of cost overruns and delays in the program mostly due to less than expected funding, total cost of the program had last risen to $2.7-$3.9 billion. Critics of the project felt such funding could be better spent elsewhere in NASA, especially on improving the shuttle's main engines. Concern was also raised about the environmental effects of solid rocket exhaust on atmospheric ozone and the area surrounding ASRM test sites.
