The Defense Ministry has reaffirmed its basic stance that the U.S. is to cover the costs for the deployment of the THAAD anti-missile system.

The ministry unveiled the view on Friday shortly after Reuters reported that U.S. President Donald Trump said in an interview on Thursday that he wants South Korea to pay one billion dollars for the deployment of the THAAD.

The ministry said there is no change in the stance that, in line with the Status of Forces Agreement(SOFA), Seoul is to provide the site for the THAAD system and build related facilities and the U.S. is to cover operational costs.

From the start of official discussions with the U.S. in February of last year over installing the anti-missile system, the ministry has repeatedly said that it will address THAAD deployment costs in line with SOFA.
