S Korean Defense Ministry to Consider Alternative Location for US THAAD System

The South Korean Defense Ministry said Monday it would consider the suitability of an alternative site for the deployment of the US Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system.
TOKYO (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the administrative head of the Seongju County asked the ministry to choose another site for the THAAD deployment instead of the one initially picked.
According to the ministry, as cited by the Yonhap news agency, the alternative site will be considered as soon as possible.
The announcement is said to have been made as county residents had formally asked the government to find a different spot for the THAAD within the county.
In July, South Korea and the United States announced that they had agreed to deploy the system in the Seongju County amid increased tensions on the peninsula over North Korea's nuclear and missile program.
The THAAD system is designed to intercept short, medium and intermediate ballistic missiles at the terminal incoming stage.
