The test launch of the North Korean missile carried out on Wednesday proves the need for the Terminal High Altitude Air Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea, South Korean Foreign Minister Yun Byung-se said.

TOKYO (Sputnik) – Earlier in the day, the South Korean military said that Pyongyang launched a missile presumed to be a Rodong from the country's province of Hwanghae-Namdo.

"The situation [ballistic test] proves the necessity to deploy THAAD," Yun said, as quoted by Yonhap agency.

On July 8, Washington and Seoul announced that the two countries had reached an agreement to deploy the THAAD in South Korea. The THAAD system is designed to intercept short, medium and intermediate ballistic missiles at the terminal incoming stage. The system's potential deployment on the Korean Peninsula has caused concern in North Korea, as well as China and Russia.
