Russia believes that the deployment of THAAD in South Korea will not be helpful to peace and security in Northeast Asia nor to the resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, according to Russian Ambassador to Seoul Alexander Timonin.
TOKYO (Sputnik) – Russia is against the deployment of the US THAAD anti-missile system in South Korea, Russian Ambassador to Seoul Alexander Timonin said Tuesday.
Last Friday, a spokesman for the South Korean Defense Ministry welcomed the deployment of THAAD as a way to 'help our national security and defense.'
'Russia believes that the deployment of THAAD in South Korea will not be helpful to peace and security in Northeast Asia nor to the resolution of the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula,' the Yonhap news service quoted Timonin as saying in a meeting with reporters.
Moscow urges all relevant nations to refrain from military actions that could aggravate the situation, the Russian envoy added.
The United States has raised the possibility of a THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) battery deployment in East Asia in the past, a decision the Pentagon says will be made through the trilateral Japan-South Korea-US security alliance.
China has opposed the THAAD deployment, arguing it could upset the regional balance and be used against Chinese interests.
