US Embassy in Warsaw praised Poland's decision to purchase Patriot medium-range surface-to-air missile systems as part of a $10-billion integrated defense program.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Embassy of the United States in Warsaw praised Poland's decision to purchase Patriot medium-range surface-to-air missile systems as part of a $10-billion integrated defense program.
Earlier on Tuesday, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said Poland would negotiate with the United States an agreement to purchase a set of the medium-range Patriots.
"This announcement marks an important moment in the security partnership between Poland and the United States," the US embassy statement reads.
The mission underlined that the missile systems, interoperable with NATO sytems, will 'significantly enhance Poland's national defense capabilities,' as well as those of NATO.
Warsaw wants to buy 6 to 8 Patriot batteries from US manufacturing company Raytheon.
Raytheon's Patriot is an advanced air and missile defense system capable of taking down ballistic and cruise missiles, planes and drones.
In 2009, the United States and NATO agreed to include Poland in its ballistic missile defense system in Europe. Russia has raised concerns over the close proximity of the ballistic missile systems to its borders, pointing out that deployments could upset regional strategic balance.
