Russia says there is no guarantee that the United States missile system in Europe will not be used against the Russian Federation.

On Wednesday, Chief of the General Staff of Russia's Armed Forces General Valery Gerasimov said "despite our numerous proposals, neither the United States, European countries or NATO in general are willing to guarantee non-use of it against the Russian Federation."

In 2009, the US administration launched its so-called Phased Adaptive Approach missile plan for Europe that called for deploying increasingly capable interceptors in four phases. In an apparent effort to appease Moscow, the administration dropped the fourth phase last year.

The approach is centered on the Aegis missile system. Its deployment started in 2011 and is to end in 2018.

The Russian official said the US proposals for a missile system in Europe went beyond what was needed for the region's security.

Moscow says Washington's missile plans across the globe are a real threat not only to Russia but also to the whole world, adding the missile systems harm the strategic balance of forces across the globe.
