Peru has successfully test fired its first domestically made rocket capable of reaching the stratosphere, the head of the National Aerospace Research and Development Commission says.

Mario Pimentel Higueras said on Wednesday that Paulet 1-B rocket was launched on Tuesday from a scientific base in Pucusana District, south of the country's capital Lima.

He said the rocket has been built with 100 percent Peruvian technology.

Higueras went on to say that the country is seeking to develop a third-generation rocket with a range of around 300 kilometers that enables the country to send satellites into orbit by 2020.

"The Paulet 1-B aerospace project is the result of 20 years' work by Peruvian scientists," he said.

The president of the congressional Committee on Science, Innovation and Technology, representatives of the Peruvian scientific community, university officials and Peruvian Air Force commanders were present at the launching ceremony.
