Iran Criticizes Turkey Over Plans For NATO Radar Station

September 06, 2011

Iran has criticized Turkey for planning to station a NATO early-warning radar system on its territory.

Last week, Turkey said it had agreed to deploy the radar that is aimed at protecting NATO members from threats coming from outside Europe, including potentially from Iran.

The system, provided by the United States, is to become operational later this year.

Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi has been quoted by state TV as saying that Iran "will not tolerate any aggression against [its] national interests."

He also said that Iran regards "the presence of America and the West as a troublesome and harmful presence for the Islamic countries."
