Taipei, April 1 (CNA) Chunghwa Telecom Co., Taiwan's largest telecom operator, will launch a new satellite in mid-May to replace an ailing one that is currently in orbit, the company said Friday.
The previous ST-1 satellite will retire at the end of this year after completing 13 years of service. Its replacement, the ST-2 satellite, will offer Taiwanese customers wider coverage in Asia and the Middle East, Chunghwa Telecom said. ST-2 was built by Japan's Mitsubishi Electric Corp.
The new satellite will be transported to French Guiana in South America on March 31 to prepare for its mid-May launch.
Chunghwa Telecom plans to keep the new satellite in service for 15 years.
