China to construct new space centre

RIA Novosti

09:49 14/09/2009 BEIJING, September 14 (RIA Novosti) - China began construction of a new space centre in the city of Wenchang on the southern island of Hainan, which is due to be complete by 2013, Xinhua reported on Monday.

The Hainan Space Satellite Launch Center will be the fourth in China. The director of the facility said that the new complex would allow China to compete more on the international commercial space launch market.

So far the most heavily used space facility in China is the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (JSLC) on the border with the Gansu Province and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.
