Missile Defense Agency Sponsors Agreement for Cooperative Research between United States and Czech Republic
08-NEWS-0084
November 10, 2008
Lieutenant General Henry A. “Trey” Obering, Missile Defense Agency (MDA) director, announced today the completion of a second cooperative project between the United States and the Czech Republic for research and development that follows from an ongoing MDA-sponsored study of Czech technical capabilities that could have application to missile defense.
SPARTA, Inc. of Arlington, Va., under contract with MDA to develop techniques to automate three dimensional scene recognition using stereoscopic imagery analysis, has in turn signed a subcontracting arrangement with the Czech Technical University in Prague for elements of this effort. The joint project will look at ways to combine imagery from different angles and with different sensors into a coherent three-dimensional picture.
The value of this overall contract is $310,000, with more than 75 percent of the funds allocated to the subcontract for the Czech Technical University to do their work.
This effort is expected to last approximately one year, and represents an important demonstration of MDA's commitment to expanding international partnerships among both government and industry communities. The majority of effort under this project will be conducted by the Czech Technical University, led by the Center for Machine Perception within the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
Last week, it was announced that DR Technologies, headquartered in San Diego, Calif., awarded a subcontract to Crytur, Inc. in Turnov, Czech Republic to investigate innovative three-dimensional X-ray imaging to support non-destructive testing of complex composite structures.
