Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne Propulsion System Successfully Powers and Positions Missile Defense Interceptor to Destroy Ballistic Missile Target

CANOGA PARK, Calif., June 26, 2008 – Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX) company, proved its ability to help defend the nation by successfully powering and positioning a missile defense interceptor to destroy an incoming ballistic missile target. The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) flight test was conducted by the Missile Defense Agency and THAAD prime contractor, Lockheed Martin [NYSE: LMT], at the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii on June 25.

“We are one step closer to the day THAAD will be protecting U.S. service men and women, friends and allies around the world,” said Craig Larson, THAAD program manager for PWR.

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne developed the Divert and Attitude Control System (DACS) for the THAAD Interceptor. DACS is a high-precision, quick-reaction propulsion system that positions THAAD to intercept an incoming ballistic missile. PWR is currently under contract with Lockheed Martin, the THAAD Weapon System Prime contractor, to produce the DACS.

THAAD will provide protection to deployed troops around the world, and other important assets and population centers against short to medium range ballistic missiles in the terminal or final phase of flight.
