ATK Receives $8 Million Contract to Manufacture Sparrow Rocket Motors at Its Rocket Center, West Virginia Facility

MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alliant Techsystems (NYSE: ATK) has received an $8 million modification to the existing production contract to manufacture solid propellant rocket motors for the Sparrow medium range air-to-air missile system. The contract modification was awarded to ATK by the Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Maryland to supply rocket motors for Foreign Military Sales (FMS).

Production of the Sparrow motors began in April 2007, with deliveries planned to begin in September 2008. In addition to casting the solid-propellant rocket motors ATK will also manufacture the metals cases. All production will occur at ATK's manufacturing center of excellence at Rocket Center, West Virginia.

The rocket motors produced under this contract will support the FMS requirements for South Korea, Germany, Portugal, Kuwait and Chile.

ATK began production of the Mk 58 Sparrow rocket motor at its West Virginia facility in 1969 and has produced over 35,000 units. The Mk 58 rocket motor is used to propel the air-to-air AIM-7 Sparrow and the surface-to-air RIM-7 Sea Sparrow missile systems.

In addition to manufacturing rocket motors for the AIM-7 Sparrow, ATK manufactures the rocket motors for the AIM-9M and AIM-9X Sidewinder as well as the AIM-120C and AIM-120D AMRAAM (advanced medium range air-to-air missile) missiles for the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Navy.
