Larijani-US Claims
Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani said Sunday the US claim that their missile shield project in Europe is intended to safeguard Europe against Iranian missiles should be called the "Joke of the year" since Iranian missiles cannot reach Europe.
Speaking to IRNA, Larijani said, "Nowadays, Americans tell jokes like this very often."
Noting that it is hard to believe that the US authorities are not aware of this fact, Larijani said, "Europe is the most important commercial partner of Iran. So, why should we ever target them?" On the reason why such claims are made, the Iranian official said one might reasonably suppose that the US is following a bigger plan and thus resorts to such propaganda to divert the public opinion away from their other objectives.
Larijani also said that in his recent meeting with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Madrid on Iranian nuclear issue, some good ideas were put forward and if 5+1 states show good will, it will be possible to reach certain agreements provided that the old arguments are not repeated.
In reply to another question on the latest developments in Lebanon and the recent UNSC resolution about the internal clashes in that country, he said the situation has aggravated and those who provoke such events should say what benefit they derive from them." Larijani also said it seems that some people in the US are prone to kind of political schizophrenia and do not learn lessons from the past.
